There are oil changes. Then there are Take 5 Oil changes.

Fact: we knew little (okay, nothing) about oil changes when Take 5 approached us with an interesting challenge. In 2016, the Louisiana-based company was acquired by Driven Brands, a portfolio company of Roark Capital Group and a leading automotive franchisor. They were in the early stages of massive franchise expansion, from 65 oil change locations in nine states to (as of 2020) 503 locations in 18 states. Their challenge? To gather, organize and translate the 35-year-old company’s complete operations procedures into a clear, concise Franchise Owners Manual for new and prospective franchisees.

We did it and, whoa, was it fascinating. What other job allows a team to parachute into a company and freely poke around every department asking all kinds of questions? (Answer: This one.) They literally (and metaphorically) showed us what’s under the hood to help us understand all of the proprietary magic that makes their business model tick.

We took that research and knowledge and produced a big, beautiful and exhaustively thorough “playbook” for franchisees.  

Along the way, they liked our work so much, we produced additional franchisee collateral, like operations workflow guides and real estate brochures. 

And now, we know more than we ever thought we’d know about oil changes. Sweet.
